I wanted to pass along the results of our Bugs first trip to the PNESHL Tournament Game Day. The following are brief recaps of the two games.
Maine and PA Center-Pedes in dogfight: The battle that was started last year when the Pennsylvania Center-Pedes (The Bugs) bested Maine at the War at the Whit, handing them their only loss of the season, was continued in a rematch during the first game day tournament of the newly created Prudential Northeast Sled Hockey League (PNESHL), and it had everyone on the edge of their seats. Dan Sousa of the Portland Pirates scored early in the first period with a turnaround shot to the top corner and after that the action was end to end with both Pirates goal tender Jeff Labbe and Bugs goalies Zach Jackson and Justin Wess registering great save after great save. The Bugs fought hard to fight back in the second period but despite their fast paced hard hitting offense the score remained 1 to 0.
The third period was an ultimate dogfight. Maine was clearly tiring but somehow managed to keep fighting. Jim Leatherman was determined to push the pace, dishing out several bone splitting, albeit clean, well-placed checks. Just when the crowd thought it would be a win for Maine, Josh Moran battled for the rebound and scored to tie the game with less than a minute to play. The game ended in a 1-1 tie with both teams playing solid hockey and their goalies keeping their teams in it till the end. The table has been set for a big rematch when Maine and the Bugs face off again during the PNESHL next tournament game day.The Bugs and Connecticut Wolf Pack face off. Having just finished playing a hard fought, fast paced exciting game against the Maine team, there was no rest for the Bugs. The schedule saw the Bugs playing back to back games, so with just enough time to rest as the ice was cut, the Bugs replenished their fluids and set about getting ready to play game two. The scoring started early for the Bugs with Captain Matt Reidy finding the back of the net within the first three minutes of play. Looking to score his first every hat trick, Reidy scored again on an assist from Mike Doyle to give the Bugs and early 2-0 advantage. Just before the end of the first period Josh Moran, Bugs hero from the first game, scored on an assist from Dave Antonini to put the Bugs up 3-0.The second period saw the Wolf pack score first, resulting from a breakdown of the Bugs defense. The goal was quickly countered by Ken Shelton who scored on a beautiful assist from Chris (the Flash) Reid. The Bugs went on to victory by scoring two more times in the 3 period on goals from Mike Doyle and Josh Moran. Although the Bugs were hoping for two wins, they were pleased with the results from while invading the PNESHL’s first game day.
OK, ANOTHER BIG BUG WEEKEND. The NY Rangers will be coming to Cobbs Creek this Sunday for two games. This is a combined A and I Team event so all bugs are encouraged to be at this. There should be plenty of ice for everybody. Congratulations again to those A Team Bugs that attended this past weekend. You participated in something that has never been done before in the and that is to play in an organized adult sled hockey league and you made the entire Bug family proud. Special thanks go out from Mike and me to Karen Wess (the unofficial equipment manager, Nick Antonini, Matt Antonini, and Ms. Reid for all your help with moving sleds, equipment, making emergency (get to the rink now) phone calls and all the rest that you did. Mike and I really appreciate this help. We are responsible at each home game during the PNESHL to do a write up of our home game as well as take pictures during the game so we certainly would welcome anyone that wants to help Mike and I with that as we are hard pressed to do this and play the game. /Jim
